FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Local officials expressed cautious optimism about addressing Paphos’ water shortage following a meeting on short- and long-term measures to combat drought.

Haralambos Pittokopitis, president of EOA Paphos, told state broadcaster CyBC that after a detailed briefing, he believes the situation remains manageable.

Speaking on the program Apo Mera se Mera, Agriculture Ministry Director General Andreas Grigoriou said officials provided thorough explanations on strengthening the district’s water balance during peak periods to avoid supply cuts.

Measures include constructing a mobile desalination unit in Kissonerga by September and assurances from the contractor that the Kouklia desalination plant will be fully operational by mid-August.

Authorities will also continue efforts to reduce water loss in the district’s networks and expand public awareness campaigns.
