Cyprus’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.0% in January 2025, down from 5.3% in January 2024, despite a slight increase from 4.9% in December 2024. This rate is lower than the eurozone’s 6.2% and the EU’s 5.8% for January 2025, according to Eurostat.
In January 2025, the EU had 12.824 million unemployed people, with 10.655 million in the eurozone. Compared to December 2024, the number of unemployed decreased by 8,000 in the EU and by 42,000 in the eurozone. Year-over-year, the number of unemployed decreased by 510,000 in the EU and by 547,000 in the eurozone.
In Cyprus, the number of unemployed was estimated at 26,000 in January 2025, an increase of about 1,000 compared to December 2024 but a decrease of about 1,000 compared to January 2024.
Unemployment by Gender
In January 2025, the EU’s unemployment rate for women was 6.0%, and for men, it was 5.6%. In the eurozone, the rates were 6.4% for women and 6.0% for men. In Cyprus, the rates were 5.5% for women and 4.6% for men, both showing an increase.
Youth Unemployment
Youth unemployment in the EU stood at 2.856 million in January 2025, with 2.263 million in the eurozone. The youth unemployment rate was 14.6% in the EU and 14.1% in the eurozone. Compared to December 2024, youth unemployment increased by 17,000 in the EU and by 3,000 in the eurozone. Year-over-year, youth unemployment decreased by 36,000 in the EU and by 93,000 in the eurozone.
There is no updated data on youth unemployment for Cyprus, as it reports this data quarterly. In December 2024, the youth unemployment rate was 9.9% (3,000 people), down from 15.7% (5,000 people) in January 2024.
