The Congolese government and M23 rebel group signed a preliminary ceasefire agreement Saturday in Qatar aimed at halting fighting in eastern Congo, according to Reuters.

M23 has carried out a violent offensive over the past six months, seizing large areas including the strategic city of Goma near the Rwandan border. Rwanda has been accused of backing the rebel movement.

In late June, Congo and Rwanda signed a separate U.S.-brokered peace agreement in Washington. As part of that deal, the United States reportedly gained access to critical minerals from the conflict-affected region.
