The Cabinet has approved €4.16 million in measures aimed at preventing and responding to rural and forest fires ahead of the summer season.

The plan includes clearing abandoned agricultural land around communities, subsidizing the purchase of firefighting vehicles, and positioning earth‑moving machinery and water tankers at strategic points during the high‑risk months.

The Fire Service is working with local authorities to establish firebreaks, with priority given to areas bordering forest land.

Cyprus has endured some of the most destructive wildfires in its modern history over the past decade, with long dry spells and rising temperatures intensifying the threat.

Major blazes have scorched large swaths of forest, forced evacuations and strained emergency services, prompting repeated calls for stronger prevention and faster response capabilities.

Authorities say the new funding is intended to strengthen frontline readiness before conditions peak in the summer.
