Sovereign Base Areas police said Tuesday they will step up patrols over the Christmas and New Year period to deter drink and drug driving and keep roads safe.

Deputy Divisional Commander Marcos Petrou said officers will be more visible in “hot‑spot” areas in both the east and west of the island.

“We understand people are out more during the festive season and want everyone to enjoy themselves, but we are urging them to be safe and return home safely,” he said.

Petrou urged partygoers to use designated drivers or taxis if drinking, warning that offenders will be prosecuted.

He said drink and drug driving can cause serious injury or death.

Police also cautioned residents to lock homes and close windows when away, noting that Christmas presents can attract opportunistic thieves. “

By taking some simple steps, you can avoid such a devastating thing happening,” Petrou said.
