FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE— The Cypriot Cabinet has approved a bill establishing a legal framework for palliative care, marking the first time such legislation has been introduced in the country.
Health Minister Michalis Damianos said the initiative addresses a significant legislative gap, ensuring that patients with severe and life-threatening illnesses, along with their families, receive high-quality, safe, and compassionate care.
Under the bill, no palliative care program—whether within or outside the General Healthcare System (Gesy)—will operate without a license and strict oversight from the Health Ministry.
Damianos also announced the creation of a National Palliative Care Council, which will include representatives from patient organizations and scientific bodies to ensure service quality, expertise, and coordination.
The legislation defines the types of care structures and provides for the establishment of specialized teams to meet patients’ needs.
