Cyprus Civil Defense issued a series of public safety recommendations as isolated strong thunderstorms, heavy rain, high winds and possible tornadoes are expected to affect the island, beginning in the west and moving across the country.
The agency urged the public to take preventive measures to reduce risks from flooding, including ensuring drains and gutters are clear, securing loose objects, protecting basements in vulnerable areas and limiting movement during intense rainfall.
During flooding, residents are advised to avoid underground spaces, not attempt to cross flooded roads, stay away from downed power lines and avoid areas prone to landslides. After flooding, the public is urged to stay clear of affected zones, avoid unnecessary phone use and confirm safety conditions with authorities before beginning cleanup.
Civil Defense also issued guidance for tornado conditions, advising residents to secure outdoor items, close doors and windows, stay away from glass and, if outdoors, move away from the tornado’s path or lie flat in a low area if escape is not possible.
For strong winds, the public is urged to avoid unnecessary travel, secure loose objects, stay indoors, avoid coastal activities and keep clear of large trees, signs and balconies. Employers are encouraged to take protective measures for outdoor workers.
