FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Investigative Committee for Missing Persons (CMP) has exhumed the remains of 1,700 individuals and identified 1,268 since 2006, CMP Spokesperson Leonidas Pantelidis announced Monday.
Pantelidis confirmed that 1,053 of the identifications were individuals listed as officially missing, while the remainder were fallen soldiers.
He emphasized the ongoing efforts, with eight teams of archaeologists, supported by over 100 Cypriot scientists, actively conducting excavations in locations including Sysklipos, Agia Irini, Kapouti, Trachona, Lapithos, Assia, Makedonitissa, and Agios Dometios.
The CMP operates with an annual budget of approximately €4 million, with a significant portion funded by the European Union.
These efforts aim to provide closure to families still searching for loved ones and to honour the memories of those who have fallen.
