Cyprus industrial output flat in May as eurozone production slips

Industrial production in Cyprus held steady in May 2026 compared with April, according to Eurostat, marking a pause after a choppy start to the year for the sector.

The flat reading followed a modest 0.1 per cent rise in April, itself preceded by increases of 1.6 per cent in March and 1.7 per cent in January. Output had fallen in both February, down 2.3 per cent, and December 2025, down 1.5 per cent.

On an annual basis, however, the picture was more positive: Cyprus’s industrial output grew 2.5 per cent in May, an acceleration from 1.5 per cent in April. Output had also risen 2.5 per cent in March and 4.1 per cent in January, with only February bucking the trend with a 1.8 per cent annual decline.

The figures came as Eurostat’s early estimates showed seasonally adjusted industrial production slipping across the wider bloc in May, down 0.2 per cent in the eurozone and 0.1 per cent across the EU compared with April. That marked a reversal from April, when production had grown 0.3 per cent in the eurozone and 0.2 per cent in the EU.

Compared with a year earlier, industrial output was down 1.2 per cent in the eurozone and 0.3 per cent across the EU in May.

Within the eurozone, the breakdown showed intermediate goods output falling 0.3 per cent and durable consumer goods dropping 1.1 per cent, while energy production rose 2.2 per cent, capital goods increased 0.3 per cent and non-durable consumer goods climbed 0.8 per cent.
