Drilling in block 5 of the Cypriot EEZ, and more specifically in the “Electra” area, began early this afternoon – Sunday – by the Exxon Mobil – Qatar Energy joint venture.
The Search and Rescue Coordination Center issued a NAVTEX for the zone until June 19.
According to information from the Cyprus Oil and Gas Commission, the completion of drilling in block 5 will be followed by block 10 of the Cypriot EEZ.
Recent media reports in Cyprus suggested that an agreement is on the agenda between Egypt and Cyprus for the utilization of natural gas within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus.
Several outlets report that Egypt is currently following developments in the EEZ of Cyprus and has tapped Nicosia to pipe natural gas to meet Egypt’s domestic market needs or to liquefy it in facilities in Egypt and export it to international markets such as Europe.
