FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Authorities at Larnaca Airport discovered 205 cartons of cigarettes and approximately 23 kilograms of rolling tobacco in the luggage of two British nationals departing for the United Kingdom.

The duty-free tobacco products were found June 18 after customs officers conducted a luggage search based on evaluated intelligence. The two passengers, both carrying two suitcases each, were found with 113 cartons of cigarettes and 5.7 kilograms of rolling tobacco in one case, and 92 cartons with 16.75 kilograms in the other.

The department noted the items did not bear health warnings in Greek and Turkish, suggesting they were not intended for local sale and were not subject to duty.

The individuals were arrested and their luggage seized. A Larnaca District Court issued a two-day detention order before both were released following an out-of-court settlement. They paid fines of €8,770 and €11,200, respectively.
