Cyprus’ parliament has approved a bill allowing police to publish, in advance, the general areas where mobile traffic‑camera units will operate, aiming to warn the public and improve road safety.

The proposal, introduced by DISY lawmaker Nikos Georgiou, permits — but does not require — police to release daily information on the broader locations of mobile camera deployments. The measure stops short of disclosing specific operating hours.

Following committee recommendations, the bill was amended to make publication optional rather than mandatory, and to remove any obligation for police to justify cases in which locations are not announced.

The legislation also clarifies the definition of “general areas,” specifying that announcements may refer to named avenues, streets, roads and highways.

Police will be exempt from publishing locations when urgent or exceptional enforcement operations are deemed necessary.
