Limassol is set to examine the potential of a tram system to alleviate its traffic issues.

A conference on March 18, featuring French Ambassador Clelia Chevrier Kolacko, will bring insights from Marseille and other French cities.

Officials in the town have emphasized the urgency of addressing traffic, with 90% of residents using private vehicles.

In a recent interview, the mayor highlighted the sustainability of trams, noting their ability to enhance public spaces.

The conference will feature experts on the technical and financial aspects of tram systems, aiming to bring practical solutions to Limassol’s traffic challenges.

Around a decade ago, the former Transport Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis proposed the introduction of a train system in Cyprus to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion.

The plan – which was never implemented – included linking major cities and towns with routes from Larnaca Airport to Nicosia, Limassol Marina, Paphos, and Paralimni.

Additionally, metro or tram lines within Nicosia were touted to improve urban mobility.
