FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus has commemorated the 14th anniversary of a deadly explosion at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari that claimed the lives of 13 people in 2011.

The annual memorial service honoring the victims — which included navy officers, soldiers and members of the Fire Service — was held at the Church of the Cypriot Neo-Martyrs on the naval base grounds. Archbishop Georgios led the service, attended by President Nikos Christodoulides and House President Annita Demetriou.

President Christodoulides delivered the eulogy, followed by a prayer and a wreath-laying ceremony.

He later placed a wreath at the Heroes’ Monument at the Cyprus Civil Defense’s Emergency Response Unit (EMAK) facilities in Kofinou.
