Cyprus Health Minister Michael Damianos praised the enduring friendship between Cyprus and Cuba during a commemorative event marking 65 years of diplomatic relations between the two island nations.

Speaking on behalf of the president, Damianos highlighted the shared values and cultural ties that have defined the relationship since Cuba became one of the first countries to recognise Cyprus’s independence in 1960. He noted that despite geographic distance, the two countries have maintained strong cooperation across diplomatic, economic, cultural and health sectors.

Damianos pointed to longstanding collaboration in international forums, including the Non-Aligned Movement, and expressed gratitude for Cuba’s consistent support on the Cyprus issue. He also reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to strengthening EU–Cuba relations, particularly ahead of Cyprus’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026.

The event, co-hosted by the Press and Information Office and the Cuban Embassy, featured an exhibition chronicling key moments in bilateral ties. Damianos also thanked outgoing Cuban Ambassador Angel Suárez Cordero for his contributions to the relationship.

“Our friendship has endured across oceans and generations,” Damianos said. “May it continue to flourish.”
