Driving on wet roads requires heightened caution and responsibility, Cypriot traffic safety experts said Wednesday, warning that reduced traction and visibility significantly increase the risk of accidents.

Authorities issued a public advisory with key safety tips for navigating slippery conditions:

  • Reduce speed: Wet pavement increases braking distance and lowers tire grip. Slower driving allows more time to react.
  • Check tire condition: Ensure proper tread depth and tire pressure according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain safe distance: Following distance should be doubled or tripled to avoid collisions during sudden stops.
  • Avoid abrupt maneuvers: Sudden acceleration, braking or steering can cause loss of control. Smooth, steady driving is advised.
  • Watch for puddles and standing water: Deep water can damage vehicles or cause hydroplaning, where tires lose contact with the road.
  • Use headlights appropriately: Headlights improve visibility and help other drivers see you. Fog lights should only be used when necessary.
  • Inspect windshield wipers: Wipers should be in good condition to maintain clear vision.
  • Prevent window fogging: Use ventilation or air conditioning early to avoid condensation.
  • Stay calm during hydroplaning: If the vehicle begins to skid, remain composed and avoid sudden reactions.

Officials emphasized that safe driving habits are essential during adverse weather conditions, especially as seasonal rains increase across the island.
