Hamas has demanded that any release of Israeli hostages be linked to a clear timetable for Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza, a senior group source said Tuesday.
The statement came during indirect negotiations with Israel in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El Sheikh. Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya said the group seeks an immediate and permanent cease-fire, along with a prisoner-hostage exchange.
Talks also focused on humanitarian aid and governance in Gaza, according to Egyptian officials. Qatar and Turkey are expected to join the discussions Wednesday.
Tuesday marked the second anniversary of the war that began on Oct. 7, 2023, which has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.
