A bill creating Cyprus’ new National Cancer Institute goes to the House plenum today, with the proposed body tasked with strengthening prevention, early diagnosis, treatment support, palliative care and rehabilitation across the country’s oncology sector.

The House health committee concluded its discussions last month, with several MPs welcoming the initiative while others raised concerns about the scope of the institute’s powers.

Committee chairman Efthymios Diplaros of Disy said the institute would advise on the national cancer registry and promote research programs.

He stressed that it would not provide medical services directly but would coordinate policy, participate in committees, cooperate with relevant agencies and submit recommendations to the health minister.
