FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department is probing a case of attempted bribery involving a public official after a 35-year-old man allegedly tried to pay off police officers during a traffic stop.

Around 7:15 p.m. yesterday, members of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) pulled over the suspect in Ayia Napa.

Officers reported a strong smell of alcohol and said the driver refused to cooperate, physically assaulted them, and attempted to flee the scene.

He was arrested on the spot and reportedly offered cash to the officers in exchange for his release.

The suspect was taken to a police station, where he underwent a breathalyzer test that showed an alcohol level of 41μg%, nearly double the legal limit of 22μg%.

He was formally charged in writing for multiple offenses and later released.
