Cyprus police make six arrests in island-wide overnight crackdown

Officers stopped hundreds of drivers and searched dozens of premises as part of stepped-up patrols aimed at curbing crime and reassuring the public

Cyprus police carried out an extensive overnight operation across the island, resulting in six arrests and hundreds of checks on drivers, passengers and business premises, authorities have said.

The operation, which police described as part of a broader push to prevent serious crime, maintain public order and boost residents’ sense of safety, saw officers conduct organised patrols at key locations in urban areas throughout the night.

Six people were arrested on a range of charges, including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, drug possession, burglary and theft, failing to appear in court, illegal possession of tobacco products, and unlawfully remaining in the Republic of Cyprus.

As part of the operation, police stopped and checked 517 drivers and 163 passengers. Officers also carried out 47 separate checks on business premises in an effort to tackle low-level offending, resulting in three reports being filed.

Hundreds of traffic offences recorded

Traffic checks conducted during the operation led to 291 reports covering a range of road offences, while a further 10 cases remain under investigation. Of the reports issued, 61 related to speeding, and five vehicles were seized in the course of the checks.

Police also carried out 119 breathalyser tests, three of which resulted in reports being filed, while a preliminary drug-testing check returned one positive result.

Ongoing enforcement drive

Police said the crime prevention and enforcement operations would continue on a daily basis, with an increased police presence, targeted checks and rapid operational response, as part of continuing efforts to protect the public, reassure residents and uphold public order.
