Cyprus weather turns as autumn signals arrive, with rain and strong winds forecast

Isolated storms expected in mountain and eastern areas as low pressure system brings first hints of the changing season

Cyprus is set for a gradual shift in weather conditions, with increasing cloud cover, localised rain and strong winds bringing a more autumnal feel to the island, according to the latest forecast.

A weak area of low pressure is affecting the region, the Meteorological Service said.

Today: mostly clear with afternoon storms possible

Conditions will be mostly clear for much of the day, though temporarily increased cloud is expected along the western coast. By the afternoon, localised cloud build-up is forecast to bring isolated rain and possibly a brief thunderstorm over mountainous areas and the eastern half of the island.

Winds will blow mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, starting light at force 3 before strengthening to light-to-moderate, force 3 to 4, with locally strong gusts of force 4 to 5 expected along the southern coast in the afternoon. The sea will be slightly rough.

Temperatures are expected to reach around 34C inland, 30C along the western coast, 32C on other coastal areas, and 24C in the higher mountains.

Tonight: clearer skies, but cloud lingers in the west and north

Conditions will become mostly clear overnight, although increased cloud will persist in western and northern areas. Winds will shift mainly westerly to north-westerly, remaining light and occasionally reaching moderate, force 3 to 4. The sea will stay slightly rough.

Overnight temperatures will drop to around 19C inland, 21C on the coast and 14C in the higher mountains.

Rest of the week: more unsettled weather before things calm down

On Thursday, localised increased cloud after midday is expected to bring isolated rain or a thunderstorm, mainly over mountainous areas and the eastern half of the island. Friday looks set to be largely clear, while Saturday will see an increase in high-level cloud.

Temperatures are expected to fall gradually over the coming days, settling closer to seasonal averages.
