FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Hundreds of demonstrators gathered peacefully in Limassol on Thursday night to protest the government’s handling of a deadly wildfire that recently swept through the region.
Protesters called for accountability over the loss of life and extensive property damage, voicing frustration at what they described as a lack of preparedness and coordinated response.
A spokesperson for the organizers said that over the past 15 years, three successive governments had failed to protect the country and its people, describing their actions as “criminally negligent.” The spokesperson added that during that period, wildfires had destroyed 315 square kilometers of land — roughly 3.5 percent of Cyprus’s total area.
