Cyprus Ranks Lowest in EU for Female MPs

Cyprus had the lowest percentage of female MPs among EU member states in 2024, with only 14.3%, significantly below the EU average where one-third of MPs are women.

According to Eurostat data released for International Women’s Day, this is also much lower than the countries with the highest percentages, which are close to 50%.

In 2024, one third of members of national parliaments across the EU were women, a 5.6 percentage point increase from 2014.

Sweden, with 45.6%, Finland, with 45.5%, and Denmark, with 44.7%, had the highest percentages of female MPs. In contrast, Cyprus, with 14.3%, Hungary, with 14.6%, and Romania, with 19.5%, had the lowest.

Compared to 2014, three EU countries increased the share of women in their parliaments by 10 percentage points or more.

Malta saw an increase of 14.9 percentage points, Latvia 13.0 percentage points, and France 10.3 percentage points.

During the same period, the percentage of women in the Cypriot House of Representatives remained unchanged at 14.3%.
