Cyprus: Rise in Animal Abuse Cases Reported

The number of animal abuse cases has surged in recent years.

In 2024, there were 150 reported incidents of animal abuse, a more than 60% increase from the 90 cases in 2023.

Since the Animal Police department’s establishment in 2021, there has been a 30% rise in cases overall.

Police think that the increase is partly due to heightened public awareness, leading to more people reporting abuse and aiding authorities.

However, authorities say that investigating these cases remains difficult, as most incidents lack eyewitnesses, making evidence gathering a challenge.
