A technical failure at the Mavrokolimbos Dam in Paphos led to the waste of 1.4 million cubic meters of water and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of fruit bats that had nested in the dam’s discharge pipes.
According to reports, the dam’s discharge pipes are located within the Natura 2000 area, and the bats, a protected species in Europe, are only found in Cyprus.
The issue was brought to the attention of the Chairman of the Parliamentary Environment Committee, Haralambos Theopemptu, who asked the Minister of the Environment, Maria Panayotu, for information on the measures taken while emptying the dam and whether it would harm the environment.
