Turkish Cypriot businessman Asil Nadir passed away yesterday at the age of 83.
Nadir was born in Lefka. He created, in London, the Polly Peck company giant, with an emphasis on the trade of food and textile products.
However, it collapsed in the 1990s when it was linked to fraud and accounting irregularities.
Facing 66 charges, Nadir fled to north Cyprus in 1993.
Asil Nadir returned to London in 2010, where he was tried and imprisoned.
In April 2016, Asil Nadir was transferred to a Turkish prison.
Once back in Turkey, Nadir was only held for one day in prison before being released.
