FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Authorities from Cyprus and the British Bases are conducting joint water analyses off Lady’s Mile in Limassol, following differing assessments from previous tests.

On Sunday, British Bases officials advised the public to avoid the area due to unsafe levels of enterococci bacteria in the water.

Speaking to CyBC, Theodoulos Mesimeris, director of the Department of Environment, said British authorities may have acted as a precaution. He noted that Cyprus follows accredited protocols and institutional procedures through the State Laboratory.

Mesimeris said the department has no information regarding the British Bases’ testing methods.

Curium Mayor Pantelis Georgiou said his municipality, in coordination with Limassol’s local government, decided to conduct independent sampling to eliminate any doubt.

Georgiou added that neither the Environment Department nor the British Bases had disclosed their previous test results or informed his municipality. He also noted that past incidents of water contamination had occurred in the area.
