Police in Cyprus are urging the public to be vigilant after receiving new reports of a scam involving individuals posing as employees of banking institutions in an attempt to steal money from citizens’ accounts.
According to the complaints, the scammers contact victims by phone, introduce themselves as bank officials and falsely claim that a problem has been detected with the victims’ bank accounts or cards. They then ask for personal information, including account and card details, supposedly to “resolve” the issue.
Police said the goal of the perpetrators is to obtain personal and banking data in order to carry out online transactions and withdraw funds from victims’ accounts.
Authorities are advising the public not to share personal information with anyone and to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a bank through official customer‑service channels. Anyone who has already disclosed banking details is urged to immediately notify their bank to prevent unauthorized use.
