FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos called on the European Union to adopt a clear stance and engage actively in the evolving Middle East crisis during an emergency videoconference of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council on Tuesday.

Kombos emphasized that the situation remains critical and that the coming days will be decisive. He urged the EU to take substantial action both institutionally and through its member states to prevent further escalation and end mutual attacks. While current conditions do not allow for negotiations, he said Brussels must lay the groundwork for future mediation.

He also highlighted the importance of operational readiness, noting that Cyprus has activated its Special National Plan “Estia,” which has facilitated the evacuation of thousands of European citizens by air.

Additionally, Kombos stressed that attention must not shift away from Gaza, particularly regarding humanitarian aid efforts.
