Egypt’s Transport Ministry has outlined plans for a new high‑speed electric rail network that will include three types of trains, officials said Sunday.
The fastest, the Velaro high‑speed train, will reach 250 kilometers per hour. A regional train, the Desiro, will operate at speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour, while freight locomotives will run at 120 kilometers per hour.
Officials said each type of train is designed to serve urban, industrial, and residential areas.
The line will also link Red Sea ports with the Mediterranean, mirroring the role of the Suez Canal by boosting transit traffic and connecting production zones with export hubs.
