FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Electricity demand in Cyprus surged to a new high on Monday afternoon, reaching 1,126 megawatts at 3:45 p.m., according to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator.

The figure surpassed the previous record of 1,077 megawatts set on June 27.

Earlier in the day, demand had already climbed to 1,046 megawatts by 12:15 p.m., well above typical levels for July, which had remained below 1,000 megawatts at that hour.

Chará Koushiappa, spokesperson for the Transmission System Operator, said the spike was driven by elevated temperatures and marked the highest electricity use of the summer so far. She added that the system has sufficient capacity and no disruptions are expected unless unforeseen issues arise.

The operator continues to monitor grid performance as seasonal demand intensifies.
