FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The European Union has adopted its 17th package of sanctions against Russia, focusing on nearly 200 vessels in Moscow’s shadow fleet, EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas announced Tuesday.

The shadow fleet consists of oil tankers and cargo ships used to bypass Western sanctions. These vessels, often privately owned, operate under different flags to evade restrictions.

The UK has also imposed 100 new sanctions on Russia, targeting its defense, energy, and financial sectors, as well as individuals involved in Russia’s information war against Ukraine, the British Foreign Office said.

The EU’s latest measures follow continued pressure on Moscow over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with further sanctions reportedly in development.
