FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – European Union President António Costa reacted to the U.S. announcement of a 20% tariff on EU goods, emphasizing the urgent need for new trade agreements.

In a post on X, Costa called for the ratification of existing deals with Mercosur and Mexico, as well as expedited negotiations with India and other key global partners.

Mercosur, a trade bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, presents a significant opportunity for expanding EU trade relations.

Costa’s statement underscores the EU’s strategy to strengthen global partnerships in response to economic challenges posed by U.S. tariffs.

Earlier Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the EU is finalizing its first package of countermeasures, signaling a strong response to the tariffs.
