FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Former European Commission President Margaritis Schinas expressed confidence that Johannes Hahn, recently appointed as the European Commission’s Special Representative for Cyprus, could contribute to resolving the long-standing Cyprus issue.
In an interview with Kathimerini newspaper, Schinas emphasized that while the Cyprus settlement process remains under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU) can play a significant role in facilitating a resolution. He underscored the importance of ensuring that any agreement results in a functional state aligned with the identity of an EU and Eurozone member from day one, arguing that only the EU can provide such guarantees.
Schinas described Hahn as a “very good friend” and former colleague, highlighting his experience and commitment to supporting the process. He welcomed Hahn’s appointment, expressing optimism about his potential contribution to advancing negotiations.
