FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Former U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez – a personality well known in Cyprus – has arrived at a federal prison to begin serving his 11-year sentence for bribery and acting as an agent of Egypt, officials said.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed Menendez is in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill, a medium-security facility with an adjacent minimum-security camp.

Given the white-collar nature of his crimes, he is expected to serve his sentence in the camp.

Menendez resigned last year after being convicted of accepting gold bars, cash, and other luxury items in exchange for political favors. Prosecutors said he used his influence to shield New Jersey business owners from legal scrutiny and helped Egypt access U.S. military aid.
