Kostas Gavriilidis, a co‑founder of Accept Cyprus and a prominent advocate for human rights and LGBTQ+ equality, has died at the age of 48, officials and friends said.
News of his death was shared by close friends on social media, prompting widespread expressions of grief across the political spectrum.
Cyprus’ president said in a written statement that Gavriilidis’ life and work were marked by “consistency, courage and a commitment to principles that strengthened the democratic fabric of our society and helped cultivate a culture of acceptance and mutual respect.” His activism, the statement added, opened new avenues for public dialogue on issues of dignity and human rights.
Parliament Speaker and DISY leader Annita Demetriou also expressed deep sorrow, noting that his loss is “enormous” for the party as well, as Gavriilidis was a member.
Political parties and civil‑society groups issued their own messages of condolence, praising his long‑standing contribution to equality and social justice.
