FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Greek President Konstandinos Tasulas made his first official visit to Cyprus , meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides and calling for renewed efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.

Tasulas, who was welcomed with a military ceremony, laid a wreath at the bust of Archbishop Makarios before holding talks at the Presidential Palace.

He emphasized the importance of reviving UN-led negotiations, which have remained stagnant for seven years.

During the meeting, Tasulas noted that the European Union has also expressed interest in finding a resolution to the long-standing dispute.

He pointed to the need for closer ties between Cyprus and Greece, stressing that after 51 years since Türkiye’s invasion of Cyprus, unity should be the priority.

“We are not approaching this with emotion or cynicism. After years of deadlock, optimism is possible,” Tasulas said.

He reaffirmed that any settlement must align with UN Security Council resolutions and that fait accompli will not be accepted. He expressed hope for the island’s reunification under conditions where all residents, regardless of ethnicity or religion, can benefit from the EU’s legal framework.
