Greenland: Danish PM tries, but fails to make phone contact with Donald Trump

An emergency meeting has been held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Denmark to discuss the situation between Denmark, Greenland and the United States.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference after the meeting that Denmark is not prepared for the current situation.

Frederiksen told the meeting that she had tried to have a telephone conversation with future US President Donald Trump . However, Trump could not be reached.

According to the Prime Minister, nothing more concrete will happen until Trump takes office. Trump’s inauguration date is January 20th.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, in turn, said after the meeting that ‘we must prepare for a good and appropriate dialogue with the future US administration.’

All party leaders in the Danish Parliament attended the emergency meeting called by the Prime Minister on Thursday evening.

Future US President Trump has called for Greenland to be annexed by the United States.

On Thursday, Greenland’s sovereignty must be respected, said EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas.

“We must respect Greenland’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” says the top Estonian diplomat, who is also Vice-President of the European Commission.

The US Embassy in Denmark has denied to Reuters that there are plans for an increased military presence in Greenland, according to the Danish news agency Ritzau.

German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz said: “In my conversations with our European partners, there has been a remarkable incomprehensibility regarding the latest statements from the United States on the principle of inviolable borders”.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but has a large degree of autonomy, except in foreign and security policy. Greenland is also linked to the EU through a separate arrangement for overseas territories.
