Guterres arrives in Cyprus for crucial round of reunification diplomacy

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has arrived in Cyprus, ahead of a packed schedule of talks that will include a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides later today.

Guterres will meet President Christodoulides, followed shortly afterwards, at 11.45am, by talks with the Turkish Cypriot leader.

At midday, the Secretary-General will lay a wreath at the Peacekeepers’ Monument outside Ledra Palace, before visiting the laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) at 4pm.

Further meetings are scheduled that day with the two sides’ negotiators, the heads of the bicommunal technical committees, and representatives of civil society.

In the evening, Mr Guterres will join both leaders for a private dinner at the residence of the UN Special Representative, Colin Stewart, near Nicosia International Airport.

On Wednesday morning, the Secretary-General will hold a joint meeting with the two leaders at the airport, followed immediately by a press conference.

The visit comes amid what officials in Athens and Nicosia have described as renewed international interest in the Cyprus problem, with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, telling President Christodoulides during talks in Athens that coordination between the two governments was “more timely than ever.”
