Hamas has claimed responsibility for a shooting attack Monday in East Jerusalem that left six people dead, according to reports.
Two gunmen opened fire on a bus, killing six civilians before being shot and killed at the scene by a police officer and a bystander. The attack occurred during afternoon rush hour and is one of the deadliest in the city in recent years.
Shortly before 4 p.m. local time, police arrested a third man suspected of involvement in the assault.
Hamas later issued a statement confirming it was behind the attack, which targeted a busy intersection in a predominantly Jewish area of East Jerusalem. The group’s armed wing described the operation as retaliation for recent Israeli military actions.
