President Nikos Christodoulides expressed hope that the goal of de‑escalation will be achieved following the announcement of a two‑week cease-fire in the fighting in Iran. He was speaking on the sidelines of an economic forum in Nicosia.
He said the Republic of Cyprus has a particular interest in the issue, both because it currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union and because Cyprus will host the informal European Council in the coming days, where regional developments will also be discussed.
“We are following very closely what is being reported,” he said, adding that Cyprus hopes the developments will be confirmed, as this is the aim and desire of the states in the region.
Christodoulides said any de‑escalation would be positive for Cyprus, its citizens, the wider region, the world and the European Union.
Later, the president posted in English on his account on X, welcoming the agreement.
