Police have announced the immediate suspension of driving licences for motorists found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In a statement, authorities said the transport minister, acting as Registrar of Motor Vehicles, has delegated to the police chief the authority to suspend a licence when it is deemed dangerous for public safety for a driver to retain it.
As a result, police said, a new procedure has been adopted and is now in force, allowing officers to issue suspension notices on the spot.
The notice is delivered by the officer conducting the roadside check when a driver tests positive for drugs in a preliminary saliva test or exceeds the legal alcohol limit in a final breath test.
