A 47-year-old Israeli citizen of Russian origin, Alexei Kartzgor, was arrested in Cyprus under an international arrest warrant issued by Russia via Interpol, Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reports.
Kartzgor is expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court on Monday as authorities begin extradition proceedings.
According to the report, the warrant relates to an old case involving the hijacking of a cargo ship in the Baltic Sea.
Kartzgor reportedly arrived in Cyprus by boat, unaware that he was wanted internationally for alleged involvement in the planning and execution of the hijacking of the vessel Arctic Sea.
Yedioth Ahronoth noted that Kartzgor had previously been arrested in connection with the case and released on bail in 2009, but later fled.
