FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A 47-year-old man collapsed and died while working under the sun at a construction site near Bologna on Monday, marking the first confirmed fatality linked to this year’s heatwave in Italy.
The man, Aït El Azam Brahim, was the owner of a small construction company and had immigrated to Italy from Morocco. He was working on a school building site when he began feeling unwell shortly after noon.
Authorities have connected his death to the extreme temperatures affecting large parts of the country, as heat-related risks continue to mount.
In response, the president of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, signed an emergency order on Tuesday banning outdoor work at construction and agricultural sites during peak heat hours — from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. — on days when heat alerts are at red level. The measure will remain in effect through mid-September.
