Lars Klingbeil has been elected as the new leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) group in the Bundestag, according to Spiegel.
Klingbeil will now lead negotiations with the Christian conservative CDU regarding a possible government collaboration.
“The role of the group will be different. We have a parliament that is changing a lot and that will challenge us because the far-right forces have become stronger,” Klingbeil said.
In Sunday’s Bundestag election, the SPD lost almost ten percentage points compared to the 2021 election.
The CDU won the election with 28.5 percent of the vote and will now try to form a government.
