EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has called on Beirut for an “immediate ceasefire” in the war between Israel and Hezbollah, saying Lebanon is on the brink of collapse.
“We see only one path: an immediate ceasefire and universal implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, Josep Borrell said after meeting with the President of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri.
Resolution 1701 stipulates that only the Lebanese army and FINUL peacekeepers may be deployed in the southern Lebanese border zone with Israel.
Josep Borell has announced that the European Union is ready to finance with 200 million euros the Lebanese army, whose deployment along the border with Israel is a critical issue in the peace talks.
Washington has presented the Lebanese authorities with a 13-point plan that calls for a 60-day ceasefire and the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon, one of Hezbollah’s strongholds.
