FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The liberal opposition party Democrats is leading in the Greenland election, according to TV channel KNR. The party’s lead is so significant that they are expected to win, even with more votes left to count.

Voting time in Greenland was extended due to long queues at polling stations.

Greenlanders are electing a new parliament, the Inatsisartut.

The election campaign has been largely dominated by one question: when and how the island will secede from Denmark, the former colonial power that incorporated Greenland into the Danish Commonwealth in 1953.

Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his commitment to Greenland’s self-determination while proposing significant investments in the Arctic island.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated, “We will continue to keep you safe, as we have done since World War II. We are ready to invest billions of dollars to create new jobs and make you rich.”

He also extended an invitation for Greenland to join the United States, calling it “the most excellent country in the world.”

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has seen growing calls for independence, with all major political parties supporting the idea to varying degrees. However, the timeline and implications of such a move remain contentious.
