A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the city of Yasugi in Japan’s western Shimane region, Reuters reported, citing Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED). Yasugi, located on the island of Honshu, had a population of about 36,000 in 2023.

Japan’s own seismic intensity scale, which runs from 1 to 7, measured the quake at a strong level 5, according to broadcaster NHK.

No tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Earthquakes are common in Japan.

There was some uncertainty about the quake’s strength. NIED initially reported it as magnitude 6.3, while the U.S. Geological Survey measured it at 5.8.
