FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Malta has signed a contract for the manufacture and installation of a second subsea electricity cable connecting the island nation to Sicily, further strengthening its link to the European energy grid.

The €300 million ($342 million) interconnector project is co-financed by the European Union and aims to enhance Malta’s electricity network while supporting its transition toward a carbon-neutral economy.

During the signing ceremony on Tuesday, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said the new cable will stabilize the energy system, improve connectivity, and encourage greater investment in renewable energy.

The project doubles Malta’s connection to the European energy network, representing a major step in boosting energy security and sustainability.
