Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has been elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party, succeeding Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister.
Carney, 59, will be sworn in within the coming days, following Trudeau’s January announcement of his resignation.
Carney’s main rival in the leadership race was Chrystia Freeland, Trudeau’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister. His election marks a significant moment as he transitions from a career in central banking to leading the nation.
